A Study on Knowledge and Attitudes towards Radiography in Seoul Area


Abstract
A Survey was carried out during the period 1 June to 31 July 1972 to obtain information on knowledge and attitudes towards radiography, 378 respondents residing in Seoul area were studied as the result of this survey and the following conclusions were reached.
1. Most of the respondents(98.4%) had experience in taking chest radiogram, Age at taking their first chest radiogram ranks high with 10-14 years and 15-19 follows next with 31.2%.
2. Motivation for taking their first radiogram; teacher¢¥s recommendation was highest with 42.0%, doctor¢¥s advice followed next 22.8%, and parent¢¥s advice with 15.6%.
3. Majority(79.0%) expressed no side effects during or after taking chest radiogram and some(21.0%) of the respondents expressed non-relevant side effects.
4. Regarding harmful effects on health by taking chest radiogram, 90.2% of the respondents considered it to be harmful. The source of information on this was 45.7%; Newspaper and Magazine, 14.7%; neighbor and friend, 13.5%; teacher and 9.7%; medical doctor.
5. Knowledge on critical parts or organs by taking radiogram, eye of gonad goes highest with 41.3% and heart or liver follows next with 31.7%.
6. As regard safe interval between taking chest radiogram, once a year ranks highest with 41.9% and twice a year follows next with 26.1%.
7. Regarding harm of taking a chest radiogram at end of pregnancy, half(48.1%) of the respondents answered "do not know" and 38.1% expressed harmful to the fetus, Among those who expressed harm to the fetus, 59.0% considered malformation and 15.3% as optical defect.
